Top Movie Downloads


Downloading movies from internet sites is becoming wide spread. There are hundreds, or maybe even thousands of sites that will allow you some form of movie download service. Although in some cases the picture quality is fairly poor, this is not always the case. With streaming video downloads, the internet speeds have an impact on picture quality, and many sites sacrifice lower picture quality for increased potential viewership.

With this becoming more and more common let’s take a quick look at the most popular movie or TV shows that are being downloaded. We will look at the numbers generated from one unnamed download site.

As is the case in general with movie download sites, it is actually the TV shows that get downloaded the most. In 2009 we over 2 million downloads of the movie Heroes topping the list. Top Gear runs a close second with close to 1.8 million downloads. A surprising third is Battlestar Galactica with 700,000 downloads. Lost also has over 700,000 download so far this year. The top ten is rounded out by the following TV series: Prison Break, Desperate Housewives, 24, Family Guy, Dexter and Scrubs.

Feature films also get a lot of action, but surprising not as many downloads for the top movies. From top to bottom movie downloads in this top ten list range from 330,000 to 570,000. The top film downloaded is the hit Transformers. This legendary comic film turned into a movie was a huge hit in the box office as well. Second on this list is the goofy comedy Knocked-Up. Third is Sniper, a thriller starring Marc Walberg. Pirates of the Carribean: At the World’s End starring Johnny Depp is number four. The animated masterpiece Ratatoulle is the fifth most popular movie downloaded from out test site. Finishing out the top ten are: 300, Next, Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum and Zodiac.

Amazingly this is just one websites download numbers. The total numbers are pretty staggering. Many sites are doing straight file sharing, like the old Napster format with music, and this has the big wigs in Hollywood up in arms. Recently there was a court case against The Pirate Bay, a website that facilitates file sharing, by major movie producers. Although there was a minor conviction in the case, The Pirate Bay continues to operate, so it is hard to see what was accomplished in this court action. The legal resolution on this type of downloading continues to be murky.

Other download options involve purchases that are definitely legal. Many sites rent or sell you movie downloads that you can download to your computer or a DVR type box that you use with your download company. Downloads are the wave of the future, so let’s hope things evolve well for the consumer.
