Our Critique – Next Picture

Based on the book “The Golden Man” by Philip K. Dick and Directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another day), NEXT features Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, Jessica Biel, Thomas Kretschmann, Tory Kittles, and Peter Falk. NEXT was also co-produced by Cage, an actor who has starred such box office hits as National Treasure, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Con Air, and Face/Off. NEXT is slated for theatrical release on April 27, 2007.
A combination of terrorism, magic and a built-in nuclear holocaust likely to unleash itself, Next is concentrated around Cris Johnson (or should we say, “Magic” Johnson?) – a showroom magician from Las vegas.
Cris is blessed with a secret gift which is not as menacing as the multiplier-effect of “The Prestige,” but equally tormenting with its limitations as well as potential. Cris Johnson has the ability to peek to the future, but only a few minutes into it. It’s hard to change the future if all you got are several minutes, right? Still there are things he is able to influence the outcome of, hence the ultimate interest of certain organizations in his abilities, using their own vested interests.
Frustrated by the interest-overkill in his unnatural gift by the outside world – government and medical establishment, and the numerous examinations he underwent growing up — he goes underground. Maintaining a minimal profile under a made-up name in Vegas, he gets by, performing cheap tricks and living off small-time gambling “winnings”. But especially gifted people are also especially “wanted” — in this instance, for any big-time requirement.
Everything is fine until a terrorist group threatens to detonate a nuclear device in LA. The countdown to extinction begins and time is draining away. Government agent Callie Ferris uses all of her smiles and wiles to weed out and corner Cris to convince the tormented hero into helping her stop the imminent cataclysm and beat the ticking clock. Cris is ultimately confronted with the daunting range of saving the world or — hold your breath — the woman he loves. Ah, is that clich or what? And all sorts of that in only under an hour or two!
The picture Next, is a Saturn Films/Broken Road Production, with Gary Goldman, Jason Koornick, and Ben Waisbren as Executive Producers. It is produced by Nicolas Cage, Norm Golightly, Todd Garner, Arne L. Schmidt and Graham King. An action thriller, Next was filmed in Los angeles. Gary Goldman, Executive Producer, told Variety, “This is really a motion picture that translates the excitement from the computer game experience into cinema.

You no doubt know these days it is very simple and trouble-free to get the film you want to watch, right when you want to see it simply by downloading it straight to your laptop or computer. Still, you do need to give some thought to a couple of things before you start downloading to be able to safeguard yourself plus your computer.

Remember it is possible to download them nearly instantly to your own PC in the coziness of your own home.
An oldie Coast Guard film Onionhead is a untidy movie with Griffith joining the Coast Guard in pre-World War 2 and becoming a ships chef. The flick tries to be a comedy, a romance, and a drama simultaneously and succeeds at none. Cast includes Andy Griffith, Felicia Farr, Walter Matthau, Erin O’Brien, Joe Mantell, Ray Danton, James Gregory, Joey Bishop, Roscoe Karns, Claude Akins, Peter Brown, and Tige Andrews.
A lot of the kids have already seen Aladdin. Disney’s animated Arabian Days tale is refined through the sensibility of an old Warner Bros. animation, as Aladdin summons up a Genie who’s overflowing with shtick. Williams’ hilarious fast fire chatter forms the attraction of this otherwise conventional tale, colorfully (and tunefully) shown. Cast includes Voices of Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, Douglas Seale and the harmonizing voices of Brad Kand and Lea Salonga.
Rent a Kid is a fun little movie about children. While the head of an orphanage takes a holiday, father Nielsen takes over with a plan to make cash by renting out kids. While predictable, this stupid premise is shockingly successful. In due course 3 youngsters are rented by a stylish ’90s couple considering adopting. A good family movie. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley.
A wicked film to watch is The Last Seduction. Pathologically malevolent and strikingly sensual woman ditches her spouse, snatches the cash he has made in a drug deal, and escapes N.Y.C. to a tiny upstate town where she attracts and bewilders a local gentleman who becomes her latest patsy. Fiorentino’s spicy femme fatale makes Stanwyck in Triple Indemnity look like Snow White! The movie is a sizzling, seductive thriller from contemporary film noir master Dahl and author Steve Barancik. Cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, J. T. Walsh, Bill Nunn, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, and Zach Phifer.
This may well be the most popular Mob movie, Slaughter’s Big Ripoff, a murderer is still playing games with the Mafia in this cool action flick. McMahon gives much more energy to his role as the mob boss than it is worth. Cast consists of Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano.
If you want to watch a humorous film you have to watch The Last Time I Saw Archie Webb’s solitary try at comedy is less preposterous than some of his more solemn films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had genuine potential, and Mitchum pleasantly underplays as the con guy. Incidentally, the actual Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast consists of Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss.

Movie Critique – The Golden Compass Fails To Live Up To The Controversy Or Possibly Not
October 11, 2010 by Jaime Lopez · Leave a Comment
Well despite watching the motion picture, I am still left to wonder what all of the big controversy is about.
I’d never browsed the book collection that New Line Cinema is hoping to become the next Harry Potter and in the event that the motion picture is an indication of what is to come. I’m not even sure that I want to see part 2 nor 3, if they ever get it made.
I could somewhat understand why the Catholic League is protesting this film, but in the end it’s a great deal to do about not a very good motion picture.
Ok now what I liked about the movie, The casting of Sam Elliott as Lee Scoresby was exactly what that role required. When you see him in the motion picture, you soon realize that he is a lot more that what he seems in the beginning.
The casting of Ian McKellen as being the voice of Iorek Byrnison, being an armored bear. At this moment I had no idea what a bear would do with that kind of serious armor protection, but with the voice of Sir Ian, you think that he will protect the hero of the motion picture.
At this point I realize that this film is part 1 of the 3 part story, but the first should have been a lot better than what we were given. I’d said earlier that I hadn’t read the books yet but even I could tell that something just wasn’t right nor was it making sense in the way it was told in the film, it simply seemed like way too many holes were with this movie. It looks about 40-60 minutes too short.
So, from what I possibly could tell if you’re an enormous fan from the book then do not even see the movie at all, you will leave the movie theater, very angry. For those who have young kids (10 years old or more) then this looks like it would be a good motion picture for them to see.
Parents, it’ll leave you frustrated. I can imagine a great film with this film, nevertheless all we get in an additional mess by the end of the day.

Plenty Of Motion Pictures To Choose From Right Now
October 10, 2010 by Jaime Lopez · Leave a Comment
Prior to the decade of the 80′s the only method you could watch the newest movie was to visit the movie theater. Occasionally a blockbuster film would be shown on TV a long time after it had left the movie theater, however it was then changed to adapt to the commercials and any primetime viewing constraints.
It had been the decade of the 80′s that video’s came out and at the start most people would actually have to rent the videotape player from the store at the same time they rented the film since the majority of people didn’t own a VCR.
Times have sure changed. Nowadays there are so many options available to see movies that everybody can get pleasure from any film they want anytime that they want. That is particularly true with downloading films. You can now download a film in the comfort of your own house any instance that you wish. Pretty wonderful taking into consideration that merely 25 years ago or so we couldn’t have motion pictures at home whatsoever!
For just a small subscription payment you can get unrestricted access to 1000s of movies. It is possible to download and begin enjoying almost at once on your pc display screen or else you can transfer the motion picture to a compact disk and watch it on your television in the solitude of your own living room. Downloading will take just a couple minutes and the collection you can choose from is really unlimited.
There’s a few sites out there that claim that you can download the movies for zero cost. Be informed that this is not legal and if they’re actually doing it totally free then there’s some catch. You’re putting yourself at risk for pc viruses, adware and malware. It is not realistic to believe that a person would just give away film downloads for no cost. There are also copyright laws and other legal restrictions that honest websites must abide by. Therefore do not be fooled by the sites that offer movie downloads at no cost.
One issue that may worry you is the fact that whenever you download a movie it will use up room on your hard disk drive. You may want to download the movie and move it to a DVD so you can go on and remove it from your laptop or computer. It simply depends upon the room you have and how you use that room
I am sure you know that downloading films is extremely helpful in that you can all the time find the movie you want any time during the day or evening. Obviously, there won’t be any late charges and for total convenience downloading cannot be beat. You can forget about video stores, no more mail in subscriptions. Downloading movies is the way of the near future.
Therefore give it a try and see how you like it. It is simple and easy. It’s convenient. You can watch almost any movie you decide and you can do it all at any time and in the seclusion of your own house. Downloading films is the best solution we have seen since watching movies in your own home became possible during the decade of the eighties.

You decide to go, ‘My God, that was….,’ just watching it. I figured, ‘What if you tried to find that falling star?’ After which I thought, ‘And let’s say it wasn’t a star, it had been a girl. Have You Ever Watched All Of The Superman Films
October 9, 2010 by Jaime Lopez · Leave a Comment
Allow us to start with, Superman Returns, the film by Bryan Singer, is the fifth film to tell the storyline of the simple young man from another planet who falls to earth and grows up to become the man of Steel, serving people and avoiding disasters that would end the world.
Here is a quick look at the first 4 motion pictures, that were produced in the seventies and eighties.
Superman (1978) – The initial motion picture sees Christopher Reeve play Superman.
With the planet Krypton facing destruction, scientist Jor-El takes drastic measures to protect the Kryptonian race – he sends his infant son Kal-El to Earth to become champion of truth and justice. Kal-El grows up as Clark Kent and eventually learns the truth about his family and realizes that he must use his abilities for the good of mankind. Clark moves to Metropolis where he becomes a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper, and also becomes his alter-ego, Superman, a defender of law and order. However, deep below Metropolis Lex Luthor is planning evil. Can Superman circumvent his dangerous plans and save an incredible number of innocent people?
Superman II (1980) – Christopher Reeve returns – The adventure goes on.
Superman will save France by throwing a nuclear bomb deep into space. Regrettably the bomb explodes, freeing three Kryptonian criminals from captivity. Meanwhile Superman has has chosed to give up his superhero powers to reside happily ever after with Lois Lane. As the criminals, led by General Zod, join up with Lex Luthor to conquer the globe, Clark Kent needs to determine whether to try and regain Superman’s powers and face his biggest battle yet.
Superman III (1983) – When the planet’s most powerful computer can control even Superman…no one on the planet is safe.
Superman has saved the world against villains from Earth and from Krypton, but will he cope when a super-computer, and its programmer, attempt to destroy him? In between his tries to save the world, Clark returns to his old High school and meets an old flame.
Superman IV: The Pursuit of Peace (1987) – Nuclear Power. Within the best hands, it is dangerous. In the hands of Lex Luthor, it is pure evil. This really is Superman’s greatest battle. Which is for everyone.
In an attempt to take over the world arms market Lex Luthor clones Superman to make Nuclear Man. Luthor hopes Nuclear Man will take on and beat Superman. My Sincere Writeup On The Rush Hour Flick
October 9, 2010 by Mike Jones · Leave a Comment
It’s difficult to consider a sadder commentary about Hollywood’s sequel fetish than the existence of Rush Hour 3. Boring, uninspired, and repetitive, this third pointless movie in an action/comedy franchise that defines mediocrity doesn’t even try to disguise the truth that its existence is a money-grab. I wasn’t a fan of either previous Rush Hour film, but neither felt as tired and obligatory as this one. Aside from some amusing scenes with Chris Tucker and a nice dj vu dance routine to “War” performed by Tucker and Jackie Chan, this movie offers nothing that had not been done better in the other outings featuring these mismatched buddy cops.
Ok, The weak plot has Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) protecting a Chinese diplomat during his visit to LA. He has top-secret details about the Triad crime syndicate but, before he can divulge it, he’s shot. Lee, reunited with his former partner, Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker), vows towards the consul’s daughter, Soo Yung (Zhang Jingchu), he will find the man who attacked her father. To get this done, Lee and Carter must pursue Triad assassin Kenji (Hiroyuki Sanada) to Paris, where they are aided by an anti-American cab driver named George (Yvan Attal), who discovers that he has a taste for car chases and gunplay.
Just like Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2, this film combines hit-and-miss comedy with lackluster action. The film doesn’t have a pulse, and also the “excitement” comes across as pallid in comparison with The Bourne Ultimatum (although at least the movie camera is not afflicted with the shakes). This movie is probably no more amusing than its predecessors, although it’s difficult to be sure. Nothing in any of the Rush Hour products may be roll-on-the-floor funny, and this one is no different. Especially lame is really a riff on “Who’s on First” that proves the stars of the movie do not have anything on Abbot and Costello. Additionally, there is a parody of emotional moments in buddy movies featuring Elton John’s “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.” Maybe that’s said to be an apology towards the audience by Brett Ratner. Also think about a scene featuring lots of raw sewage that may on some level be a comment about where the franchise is headed.
Just one Of the numerous areas when the movie disappoints (although, with that said, it’s not unexpected), it’s in the lack of physicality displayed by Jackie Chan. At 53, he can no longer perform the kinds of stunts that made him an international star. Putting life and limb at risk in the line of duty are things for younger men. Most of Chan’s most daring work may be passed on to stunt-men there are hints of CGI (although not enough where it is distracting). The end-credit outtakes, which are typically a horror show of Chan’s muffed stunts, are limited here to verbal bloopers, messed-up lines, and the occasional minor pratfall. Chan’s gift for comedy appears as muted as his martial arts derring-do. At no time during Rush Hour 3 is he particularly funny. My assumption has been that as Chan aged, he’d gravitate more toward comedy, but this is not an excellent start.
I am sure Chris Tucker accumulates a pleasant paycheck but none of the slack. However, while it’s a stretch to call him up “likable,” at least he’s not as irritating as he is in Rush Hour and Rush Hour 2. Both Chan and Tucker are outmaneuvered within the comedy department by Yvan Attal, whose character’s love/hate relationship with American culture results in some of the movie’s wittiest (and I use that word loosely) scenes. Max von Sydow, in “concealed bad guy” mode, is on hand to do what he is doing best with his glorious bass voice. (Now that Bergman is officially in his grave, he is able to turn over.) And Roman Polanksi is included in a cameo as a French policeman who anally rapes Lee and Carter. (Yes, you read that correctly. A PG-13 movie features anal rape – although, obviously, it’s only implied and is employed to obtain a laugh.) Why Polanski would agree to play this part is anyone’s guess; it’s not the type of thing that will help his less-than-sterling reputation. I kept waiting for Jean Reno to show up, since he always seems available during these English-speaking films set in France.
Does Rush Hour 3 deliver what audiences expect from it? Only its most devoted fans will say “yes.” The formula is within place however the performers are just doing the motions. It is a stale version compared to the prior films, plus they were not all that great to begin with. One could reason that director Brett Ratner at least invested Rush Hour with some energy. Even throughout the climactic battle at the Eiffel Tower, there is nothing resembling that here. This is yet another disposable summer movie – so lackluster that it’s not even worth searching out when it plays on television. The Rush Hour experience, which never attained anything resembling full speed, originates to a crashing halt.

Fiction And Movies Concerning The South Seas Islands
October 8, 2010 by Jaime Lopez · Leave a Comment
In recent times, Tahiti and Polynesia have provided writers and movie makers with colorful subject material. Early travelers spoke of a lot of women on exotic shores, and Fletcher Christian added drama to the plot by leading a mutiny against the tyrannical Captain Bligh.
North American writers Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall brought out the Bounty Trilogy. This three-part novel handles Christian’s mutiny on the Bounty, the escape of Bligh and the loyal crew members to Dutch Timor, and the colonization of Pitcairn Island by Christian and the fellow mutineers.
The novel was an instant bestseller, and director Frank Lloyd soon made it into a movie, Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable. In keeping with the mood of his time, the mutiny was presented as a simplistic struggle between good and evil, and you may recall that the film won an Oscar for best Picture in 1935.
Then Marlon Brando travelled right down to Tahiti to star in a blockbuster remake of Mutiny on the Bounty. MGM’s 1962 production is still considered probably the most magnificent motion picture ever produced within the South Pacific, in part because of the beautiful scenery of Tahiti and Bora Bora. Thousands of Tahitian extras appeared within the film, and Brando married his first lady, Tarita Teriipaia.
During 84, another version of the Bounty was released, with Sir Anthony Hopkins as a resolute Bligh and Mel Gibson as an uncertain Christian. From the three Bounty films, this might be probably the most historically accurate, and it’s certainly the one using the greatest psychological depth. It had been largely filmed in Moorea’s Opunohu Bay.
An additional Nordhoff and Hall book, The Hurricane, was brought to the big screen twice. John Hall’s 1937 motion picture portrays a young couple fleeing a despotic governor. In 1978 Dino de Laurentiis reshot The Hurricane on Bora Bora, with Mia Farrow and Trevor Howard. The resort created to house de Laurentiis’ crew still exists since the Sofitel Marara.
Author W. Somerset Maugham also had close ties towards the south Pacific. In 1943 Albert Lewin filmed The Moon and Sixpence, Maugham’s fictionalized account of Paul Gauguin’s life in Polynesia. The nonconformist artist’s incompatibility with French colonial life provided Maugham with a pretext look around the role of the artist in society. Another famous Maugham story, Rain, occur Samoa, has been manufactured into a film many times.
Various other well-known writers who have popularized the legend of Tahiti include Herman Melville, Pierre Loti, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, Rupert Brooke, and James A. Michener. Their own stories, plays, and motion pictures have helped create the myth of a South Seas paradise. As well as nowadays, Tahiti and Polynesia beckon to romantics wishing to live their share from the dream.

Pictures Converted Into Television Shows – Bad Or Good Idea?
October 8, 2010 by Jaime Lopez · Leave a Comment
There is a long history of movies that hit the big screen diving into television sets in the forms of Television shows. Some have been met with huge success and longevity, but most of them were virtual train wrecks.
On the surface it seems like a realistically great idea: take a film that audiences adored and extend it into a more digestible, bite-sized version that they could watch each week in the comfort of the homes. But carrying over the success of a film into the television realm seems to involve a tricky and delicate science that nobody seems to be aware of the formulas to.
A TV series adaptation of the Blade trilogy and the recent news of a live-action The exorcist television series coming to life near the end of the decade beg us to inquire about whether either will succeed. Obviously, success in this sense could be interpreted in a variety of ways. Will it depend only on the caliber of the show? Most likely not, since there has been movie-to-television cross-overs which were critically acclaimed but were only given a few months to run. Will it depend solely about the interest in the show? Not as much as one would think. So what does success in this genre rely on?
Let’s take a look at some TV shows that were originally movies that ran for long periods of time, and more that burnt out quickly to see if there is a visible pattern.
MASH, Lots of people forget that MASH was originally a movie (1970) which was met with approval in the theaters. It made its way onto TV screens in 1972 and ran completely to 1983.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, This movie was launched in 1992 and was met with very mixed results. Somehow the show were able to run for seven solid years (1997-2003) as a TV series with a huge group of followers.
Stargate SG-1, Stargate was a movie released in 1994. It had been met with mixed responses, however the show fared much better, running from 1997 all the way till now.
Highlander, The film version hit theaters in 1986. Audience response was decent, but the TV series that was launched in 1992 found a faithful following. It ran until 1998.
La Femme Nikita, Nikita would be a film directed by Luc Besson that was released in 1990 and received good responses from audiences. The television series were built with a strong following and ran on TV from 1997 to 2001.
My Big Fat Greek Life, though movie studios underestimated My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s chances for success about the giant screen, CBS overestimated its chances for similar triumph in a television series. This big fat disaster ran for seven episodes in 2003.
Clueless, In 1995, Clueless did well in cinemas like a comedy-romance. However, when the motion picture became a Television show in 1996 it had been simply a vain, painful, and lame television experience. The show somehow managed to remain on air until 1999.
Ferris Buellers Day Off was a huge hit in 1986, but the TV series only lasted one miserable season in 1990. Ferris has had plenty of off days since then.
Planet of the Apes, The Charlton Heston-infused movie did well in the theaters in 1968, but for whatever reason the TV version only lasted one season in 1974.
Uncle Buck was the movie really that great in 1989? It was just a standard comedy that attempted to teach children the thought of appreciating your family. So was it series in 1990 really necessary? One season informs us “no”.
There are countless other movie to TV shows that only lasted a few months, in the event that. Dangerous Minds, Fast Times, and Parenthood are simply three of numerous, many failures with this genre.
The possibilities against the soon-to-be Blade television series and George Lucas’ live-action Star wars TV show. Though Blade doesn’t really seem to be anything special, it will likely be interesting to see if the vampires and monsters that carried the film trilogy can do the same on TV screens.
Star wars comes with an insanely huge and loyal fan base, the kind of which no movie to TV series has already established the posh of getting, and could be the tipping point for that shows potential longevity and success. But in no way will this guarantee the triumph of the adaptation. Neither will high caliber story-lines or acting.
It would appear that tv audiences and studios are definitely more fickle than their movie counterparts, so good luck to both creators of the movies and their television counterparts, both of whom is going to be at the complete mercy of factors which are virtually unknown.
